Just in time for Mother’s Day!

So for all those celebrating today, after breakfast in bed, or the delightful meal out, here’s a nice way to end the day. And for all those who spent the day with Mom, now here’s your reward. Pick up that glass of shiraz, put up your feet and prepared to be entertained.

Santa Crux has turned her attention to the episode Dead Man’s Hill and asked: “What led Violet to become involved with someone like Johnny Ringo?”

Of course, she supplied the answer most wonderfully.

So turn your attention to the Ballad of Violet and Johnny
(Complete with the lyrics appropriate to the lone prairie!) Laughing

And here is the link to the rann and friends website

Enjoy and be sure to let Santa Crux hear your thoughts on this great western story.

rann

Another marvelous job by Santa Crux!
The character's pasts are true for the story and the atmosphere is the same to the episode of TLW.
I could see the dusty ground and Johnny's cold blue eyes like if I watched on the TV.
Also the story made me remember how impressive original episode was and how much I enjoyed those new characters whom the original casts played.
Santa Crux, thank you for sharing!
Rann, thank you for the information and keeping your great website!

Yet another fantastic pre-quel from santa crux. Thank you. You are an expert at writing TLW prequels where the characters 'look' right, 'talk' right, and 'act' right. I especially liked the background of Johnny and Violet growing up. I got the feeling in the Season 3 episode that Johnny was 'bad to the bone.' However, you gave us an explanation for his anger, actions, and therefore 'bad' behavior. I felt that you made his bad behavior more understandable and his character even sympathetic to a point. I also liked Violet's being a little older than Johnny Ringo as an explanation for her nurturing and more mature attitude towards him and his difficult childhood. Nice job! And congratulations on giving us another episode to enjoy!

Thanks, folks for your wonderful comments on the story.

Dead Man's Hill is one of my absolute favourite episodes - the cast did such a good job of creating fascinating characters. It practically begs for a fan fic. I'm the second fic writer to head out to the wild west. I loved the way Rann took Maylene and Jeremiah through the rest of their 'lives of adventure' in Destiny Made and wondered what I might write about.

I got to thinking about Violet, brave enough to take on Johhny Ringo and yet flawed enough to get caught up in a life of crime. There was a real sense of 'history and electricity' between her and Johnny.

After I finished writing this story, I wasn't sure if I really 'liked' any of the characters I had written. Was Violet stupid or just in love? Was Maylene well on her way to a lonely life sitting sadly on a barstool in the Trading Post? Was Johnny a victim of a loveless childhood or just plain evil?

I was wondering what readers thought of the characters of Violet, Johnny and Maylene?

Marimari, di12381 and Florida Fan - thanks for reading and posting.

Big thanks also to Rann who beta'ed my story with her shrewd eye and romantic heart and who posted the fic on her awesome site. Thanks too to Mary Whimsey who made some wise suggestions about characterization.

I hope some of you get an opportunity to read Ballad. Don't worry - it's not too long. I'd appreciate any observations you have.

Thank you, Olga.

I'm glad you like my site. I'm very fortunate with the writers who let me post their excellent stories. The two most popular stories on my site are "A Most Adorable Man" by Lisa Paris and "Following Roxton" by Santa Crux. I enjoy stories where writers are true to the characters and the show. When reading them, it's like getting more episodes. Cool

Santa Crux's latest, "The Ballad of Violet & Johnny" is a wonderful backstory to Dead Man's Hill. For anyone who hasn't read it yet, I recommend reading it and then watching Dead Man's Hill. (In a bit of shameless self-promotion, follow it up with a reading of "Destiny Made", my sequel to the episode. Laughing )

I haven't been able to do much writing myself this past year or so. Getting the chance to host and/or beta some excellent stories has been wonderful.

Susan Zell and Mary Whimsey are the creators of the TOTSS Virtual Season 2, so when they're ready, I'll post their next story. I'm looking forward to the next installment, as well.

Thanks again for your kind words.

Oh, there is nothing like a Santa Crux story to make my day! Once again, she punches us all to the mat with her excellent characterization and marvelous prose. I am sitting here in a happy emotional pool of envy and admiration.

Violet always reminded me a little of Sharon Stone's character in The Quick and the Dead... another Western I love dearly.

Sherri, cenobitetx - glad you found it!

Sherri - hope you like it.

cenobitetx - Thanks so much. I hope that admiration wins the battle with envy!

You're right - Violet physically and 'tough on the outside, soft on the inside' character-wise is similar to Sharon's Stone's role.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get around to this. As always Sc I enjoyed your story.

You know Veronica is not my favorite character but this story helped to explain a lot. You showed how Violet and Ringo become involved in the first place . When I watched this episode I could never figure how Violet ended up with Ringo. She seemed too bright and too good to get mixed up with an outlaw. Also you showed how Johnny turned into an outlaw. The years of neglect and abuse took their toil.

To me it makes an episode more enjoyable if you know the background. How did they end up there? What influenced their thinking, their decisions? Even if this information is "imagined " it gives us more insight into the character and gives the episode more depth.

Thanks again

I too am sorry it's taken me so long to read and review. Thank goodness this weekend finally gave me a few free hours.

As always, wonderfully done, santa crux. I think you captured the nuances of the Johnny/Violet relationship perfectly.
You could see his downward spiral and the deep betrayal Violet felt, and maybe a little hurt that her love wasn't enough to change Johnny.
Poor Violet AND Johnny. They had it hard ... if only they had made the right choices.

Looking forward to the next SC.
And thanks once again to rann for posting. Smile
