I'll be going to Comic Con on Sat. 26 July.
Just wondering if anyone else here will be going as well.

I was just going to post a topic about this too! lol I got the thurs. and fri. ticktes for me and my sis and I wanted to ask if anyone was going to be there as well...weird. She's obsessed with a book that she keeps telling me to read. Haha, some girly teen book. I think it was called moonlight? or something similar? But yeah, I'll be there! Yay! she says that I have to be there because all her friends are gone for the summer Razz either way, I can't wait to be buried in goodies! people say that they give you bags just to put all the free stuff in that they give away, but you'll never have enough room for them.... Shocked mine too! Have fun! anything you're looking forward to? I'm hoping there'll be stuff for the next terminator movie, or something from the tv series.

I've always wanted to, but it's sadly a tad too far for me- have a great time, though! Sounds like it'll be a blast! Very Happy

That, anything new on LOST (and their new show - FRINGE) and the new Star Trek movie. I think that is also the opening day of the new X-Files movie so it'll be interesting to see if anything appears regarding that too ... Smile

Howdy all-

I'll be at ComicCon all 4 days. Being a local, I try to go every year. Let me know if you have any questions. I'll be posting some general advice later today. You definitely have to approach ComicCon a certain way or you'll be completely overwhelmed.

OK, here are some things that people should know about ComicCon in order to maximize the experience. However big you think this thing is, think bigger. There are going to be 125,000 people at each of the 4 days of the con, and that doesn't include guests and industry people.

1) Plan, plan and plan some more. My friends and I plan our time at ComicCon like we're staging a military invasion. Look at the schedules. More importantly, look at times and room numbers. Hall H is the biggest room at the convention center, holding about 6500 people. It is usually used for big name movie studio events, but this year is also being used for more popular TV events like Heroes. Ballroom 20 is the second largest room, holding about 4000 people. It is primarily used for big name TV events. Just because an event is in a certain room at a certain time, do not for a moment think you can show up 15 minutes before and get a seat. People line up for events in Hall H and Ballroom 20 HOURS before they're going to begin. Most people will sit through 2 or 3 panels they have no interest in simply to insure that they have a seat for a panel that comes hours later. The best way to plan a day it to try to stay in one room. They do not clear rooms between panels, so once you're in, you're in. Hall H has its own bathrooms and food vendors, so there really is no reason to leave once you're in. To leave ballroom 20 for a bathroom run, you'll be issued a pass that you have to show to security in order to get back in. Even smaller rooms like 6CDEF, 5A, 6A and 6B will develop lines for more popular events. Last year I made it to the Supernatural panel with an hour to spare and still only made it into the room by the skin of my teeth. Be aware that though the convention doesn't 'begin' until 10:00 on most days, people will get to the convention center hours before to start lining up for particular rooms.

2) Downtown is going to be a zoo. Actually, more like a nightmare. Hotels are full. Restaurants are full. Traffic is abysmal. If you're staying downtown, remember that finding places to eat that don't have multi-hour waits is going to be difficult. There is a Ralphs grocery store walking distance from the convention center. Many people will stop there on their way in to pick up snacks or sneak away from the convention center to grab something quick in the middle of the day. If you are driving into town, the parking garages for the convention center will be completely full by 10:00. If you expect to park, you'll be schlepping in with the dawn with me at about 6:30 (Fri and Sat) or 7:00 (Thu and Sun) to get a parking spot at the convention center. An easier way to do it is to park out of downtown and take the trolley in. The trolley should be running their special event lines which go straight from Mission Valley to the convention center without needing you to switch trains.

3) The San Diego convention center is large. Things are spread out. The floor of the convention center, where all of the industry booths are, is so large that you can't see one end from the other. Somebody once told me that if you start at one end and walk up and down every aisle till you reach the other end, you will have walked a total of 5 miles. There are lots of really interesting booths and it is possible to spend a lot of money very quickly. It is also going to be jam packed, particularly around the bigger industry booths. If you are the least bit claustrophobic, you probably want to take the floor in short bursts. Wear very comfortable shoes. I can't stress that enough. I usually break out a new pair of tennis shoes (or, atleast, a new pair of gel cushion inserts) before every Comic-Con, and my feet still beg for mercy at the end of each day.

4) Save yourself the money and a headache and bring in your own food/snacks/bevs. You will find the token hotdog/pretzel/soda vendors, but the food is overpriced and pretty tasteless. My traditional Comic-Con backpack holds a couple of PB&J sandwiches, water and/or soda, and some high protein snacks like a raisin/nut/dried fruit mix.

That's about everything that comes to mind at the moment. Please feel free to IM if you have any other questions. Also, if you want to meet up at ComicCon, IM and I'll give you my cell phone number.

Hope you guys have a blast. It really is a great time.

So it sounds like there's not really much time to spread between events. I just have some questions:

1) When should we shop and when should we go see the different events?
2) How much time should we allow before each event?
3) How much money should we bring minimum?
4)How many events should we expect to see in one day?
5) Are there any rules about taking pictures

My sister told me to tell everyone that she's freaking out that the convention center is five miles...her exact words were "humongous' Razz Thanks for all the info Ry!

P.S. -Stargate Fans, principal creators and cast members of the Stargate movie, "Stargate Continuum, The key creative team from Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment and FireSky Studios, of SG's first online game, "Stargate Worlds"; Cast and creators of Stargate Atlantis' Season 5, are all planned to be at Comic-con, Fri. Jul. 25 in Ballroom 20!

Go Here for the panel schedule!

Geoff-

1)My shopping time is usually when I have a long block of at least a couple of hours where I don't have a panel I want to attend. One of the nice things about being able to go on Preview Night is that it gives me an opportunity to shop without the stress of knowing I have to be across the convention center if I expect to get into the panel that's in 3 hours.

2)If you are trying to get into any big movie or TV event, I would plan on getting in line at least 1.5 hours before. You're best bet, like I mentioned above, is to plan on attending panels that are in the room you want to get into well before the panel you're interested in. I'm attending the Stan Lee panel tomorrow not because I have a huge interest in Stan Lee but because the Torchwood and Doctor Who panels are immediately afterward and I want a good seat.

3)It all depends on what kind of shopper you are. I've had years where I've spent a couple of hundred dollars and years where I barely spent anything. Most individual autographers will charge, on average, about $20 for an autograph. The convention floor is a plethora of pretty much everything you could imagine from comic books to regular books to jewelry to DVDs to collectibles of all types to artwork etc.... The spending possibilities are endless. Know how easily you give in to temptation and plan accordingly.

4)I average about 4 events/day, but that comes from careful planning. There will be times when two panels conflict. I will generally choose the panel that keeps me in or near the room I'm already in rather then a panel that involves a race across the convention center to a line that is around the block.

5)No rules about taking pictures, but very strict rules about photography or video during Comic-Con exclusive footage presentations. If they catch you with a camera on, they will take it away.

-Ry
