From the Fresno Bee 1999
August 15, 1999
THE 'XENA' FILES
Lucy Lawless strapped on a leather-and-metal bustier and people took notice. ''Xena: Warrior Princess'' became one of the top original dramas in syndication.
When a syndicated show (programs purchased to air when there are no network shows) mows down the competition like a Centaur running through a cornfield, the first thing Hollywood tries to do is copy the program. A batch of syndicated shows for fall are aimed at luring viewers like video Muses with programming cut from the same cloth as the much-heralded Warrior Princess.
Set to strike some very serious blows for women's rights this fall will be ''Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World'' (to air on KJEO, Channel 47), ''Peter Benchley's Amazon'' (slated for KAIL, Channel 53) and ''Relic Hunter'' (KMPH, Channel 26). They are all looking to ride the short hemlines of female stars to ratings success.
Here's how they have copied ''Xena.''
The star has to be beautiful, but tough.
Fashion model Carol Alt portrays Karen Oldham, a flight attendant who is one of six survivors of an airplane crash in the Amazon River basin in ''Amazon.'' What was only supposed to be a short flight (think ''a three-hour tour'') ends up being a struggle to survive in the jungle and find a path back to civilization.
Alt's character is ''Gilligan's Island's'' Mary Ann with attitude. She won't be just standing around in the jungle waiting for co-star C. Thomas Howell to save her from the peril of the week. This flight attendant explains to her fellow survivors that they had better return their fears to an upright position and prepare for a bumpy ride out of there.
Past syndicated shows made the attractive woman in the group the most helpless. That was something they got from network shows and feature films.
''I would not have done the show if the character had been written that way,'' Alt says in no uncertain terms. ''One of the things I love about the character is that she is right in there. She's a strong character who is a thinker.
''I'm always the one who goes in there if someone is hurt or something needs to be done. I told them the best way to write for my character is write for a man and then change the name to Karen.''
In other words, Alt's character is very Xena-like.
Alt was a perfect pick. She may have an angelic face that photographers love, but her background is in sports. She played basketball and lacrosse in high school and college. She recently won a Formula One auto race in Italy.
The Xena-style duties at ''Relic Hunter'' will be handled by Tia Carrere. As Sydney Fox, she is a college history professor by day and a relic hunter at night. She described the character as smart, capable and able to kick the backside of any bad guys.
Relative newcomer Jennifer O'Dell has traded guest spots on ''Beverly Hills 90210'' and ''Renegade'' for the role of Veronica in ''The Lost World.'' The character was abandoned on a mysterious plateau where dinosaurs roam. She not only has survived, but has become the savior for a handful of explorers who show up at her tree house door.
Just like Xena, all three of these characters spend their days stomping around in rather exotic locations. Alt's character must brave the dangers of the Amazon as filmed on a sound stage in Canada and on location in the Australian rain forest. ''The Lost World'' uses the same countries for its location shooting.
The majority of Carrere's work will be in Canada, but there will also be episodes filmed in Paris. The French capital is not in the wild, but her character will be heading to exotic locations to find lost treasures.
While Xena deals with odd bad guys like Ares and Chaos, the three new action heroines also will have plenty of weird foes.
''In one episode I have to find a guitar Elvis gave to a man when they were both in the army in Germany,'' Carrere explains. No, there is no anti-Elvis Gang trying to stop her. But there are other relic hunters, greedy businessmen and the greatest horrors of all -- ex-boyfriends.
O'Dell's character will face creatures ranging from a computer-generated Tyrannosaurus Rex to a tribe that runs its business much in the way of the Spanish Inquisition.
''We have these weird bugs. I have had to pull leaches off my co-stars. I took live maggots out of C.T.'s (C. Thomas Howell) arm,'' Alt says. She doesn't try to hide her displeasure at having to deal with the six, eight and multi-legged creatures.
Series creator, Peter Benchley, has also thrown in a tribe of European decedents who cause the group trouble.
As for the suggestive costuming that has turned a few heads in Xena, O'Dell will spend her time in a stylish two-piece loincloth while Alt plans to wear the same pair of shorts the entire series.
''I don't want her worried about her clothes all the time,'' Alt said.
Spoken like a true warrior. Xena has never stopped to make sure her sword was still in fashion or whether her attire could be seen on Paris runways.
The three new action stars will have exotic locations, tough attitudes, eye-catching wardrobes and bizarre villains. There's only one more thing they all would like to copy from ''Xena'' -- high ratings.
