We split the topic. Here you can discuss video taping at conventions, in general. The Con Memories thread is about The Lost World Convention.

TLW Team

I've a question to all of you :) Do you have any videos from any of Conventions?

Yes. On the Special Edition of the Liberty set of DVD's of the show, Season One, (CAP, you correct all the mistakes here...my memories aren't that specific), there is footage of the GOH portion of the 2003 Con. The attendees weren't allowed to film any video cos Peter Bergman had sent in a special crew just for that purpose. Now, whether or not this portion of the DVD is up on some website, I don't know.

I also know of some 'secret' seconds of video that someone got on their camera of Will...but I'll never tell

REALLY??! Why the hell not? How could they prevent the attendees from shooting videos?

Anyway, it would be nice of someone who owns some con videos to upload them.

Margie, you covered all the bases I'll just add one more to answer Roxyboys question.

You'll see the following statement at conventions
ABSOLUTELY NO AUDIO OR VIDEOTAPING ALLOWED AT ANY CONVENTION. Still photography is for personal use only - public dissemination and commercial use strictly prohibited.
.

There are civil laws set up at conventions about videotaping guest stars.

I've only been to 14 conventions (StarTrek/Xena/Hercules/TLW) so I could be wrong, but the "no videotaping" restriction I believe is a practice standard to these type of conventions.

Well, I haven't been to any convention, but a friend of mine went to an Avatar one (in Canada, I believe, I'll have to ask her) - and she has got a video of Jessie Flower from there...

What a stupid statement! Thanks CAP for telling me :) I didn´t know about this law, as I have never taken part in any convention.

I asked her - it was (I hope I sp everything right) the Anime North 2009, Canada's premiere fan-run anime convention. Held in Toronto, May 22nd-24th.

I think the reasons for no videotaping are pretty simple and make sense, especially in this day and age where no celebrity can sneeze without it showing up on TV or online somewhere. They don't want other people making money off their image or behavior, and it makes sense. The people who are paying them to appear in movies and television shows don't want "free" images out there--especially if the videos contain something that might hurt the reputation of anyone involved. We also know how activities and images can be distorted with technology.

People these days are very accustomed to seeing, reading, hearing everything FREE. It's a privilege, not a right. :D

Exactly CalGal. Also some actors don't get paid a whole lot to appear at conventions. Some times they only make enough to pay for the trip out to whatever convention they're attending and they do that by selling their pictures and autographs. I know for a LOT of the cast of Farscape (especially everyone except Ben & Claudia) make money to live off doing the cons here in the states and it's not cheap to fly them from Australia to the US.

Sadly there are people who attend the cons who purchase autographs and pictures and then sell them online at a higher price than they paid at the cons. I think part of the reasoning behind the no video tapping is because the actors will NOT get paid for that or any subsequent videos that would no doubt be made. Actors make their living off their image and if folks video tape them with out their permission and then sell said video tape, it's wrong.

No worries roxyboy. A lot of people don't understand that for a lot of actors, especially if they're not the top billed actor at cons or in a TV show, do NOT make a ton of money. So they find ways to supplement their income by appearing at cons and selling their photos and autographs. So having fans tape them can take money away from them, especially the "fans" who think nothing of selling a tape they've made at the con for their own profit.

I know with the Creation Entertainment group, they sell copies of the videos they make at the cons and sometimes a portion of that profit is worked into the contract for the actors.
