Trick? or Treat?
You can decide which it is.

What happened in Cave of Fear?
What if the ghost that Roxton encountered wasn’t just a hallucination?

Just in time for Halloween – a story set at the end of Cave of Fear and spanning until the end of Salvation. Suitable reading for a dark and stormy night.

The Haunting at http://rannalso.home.att.net/Haunting.htm

Of course, it’s a completed story.
You can find other stories at rann and friends fan fiction http://rannalso.home.att.net/index.htm

My thanks to SantaCrux for the expert beta reading and insight into the story. She made heroic efforts so that I could post this in time for Halloween. I guess I'm still not ready to leave the plateau.

Enjoy and Happy Halloween!
rann

Well written, rann. You spliced a couple of great episodes together with enough background and genuine emotion to make not just a great TLW story but a terrific character(s) piece. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. :)

I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of The Haunting and if you enjoy watching Roxton and Marguerite battle demons within themselves and in the world outside using only their strength of mind and soul - and of course their feelings for each other  - well if that's something you like, this is the story for you. Read it tonight while waiting for the trick or treaters! :JackoLanterns:

One very well written story, rann! You managed to describe the characters and their personal emotions in a wonderfull way.
And that spookiness is quite matching for tonight. :JackoLanterns: I can only recommend the story.

I hope everyone had a very spooky and fun Halloween. :JackoLanterns:

Thank you, Beckers, SantaCrux, and Maria for your kind words.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the story.

This was a story I started a couple of years ago when I considered the concept that perhaps the images in Cave of Fear were not completely figments of the imagination. My deep appreciation to SantaCrux for helping me take it from a simple vignette that had lingered on my hard drive into a complete story.

Thanks for reading.

HURRAH!!! A new rann fic! Must go read this right now!!!

--Zakiyah (very excited!)

Edited to add: Definitely a treat! I loved how you wove everything together, and how you kept multiple interpretations open all throughout the story. Masterfully done!

The Haunting is a true trip to The Lost World. I felt like a voyeur reading this piece; I was behind the scenes of Cave of Fear and Salvation. I would recommend watching these two episodes again before you read The Haunting, as the story weaves elements of what we already know with an insightful inner monologue. Rann has done a brilliant job of getting into the minds of Marguerite and Roxton, delicately plucking little tidbits throughout The Lost World canon, and showing us how this couples future had always been shaped by their past. No dinosaur chases… no experiments gone awry… just a quiet peek behind the curtain.

Thanks to everyone for posting.
Thank you, SunKrux and I'm glad you enjoyed the story.
I hope, Zakiyah, that you enjoy the story.
What a lovely review, Bingo32, thanks so much for the thoughtful comments.

Once I got into the writing of the story, it struck me how the strands of the two episodes, Cave of Fear, and Salvation, could be interwoven. Ghosts, skeletons, tombs, guilt, revenge, remembrance. In particular in Salvation's ending scene, where Roxton remains mostly shadowed but Marguerite looks up at him as she lays the bouquet in the tomb, seemed most eloquent.

Thanks again to all who have read and enjoyed.

I finally found time to read this fic and I can say that, even with Halloween more than a month past, it was a great read. It has just the right amount of spectral spookiness, and it captured the S1 characters of the show beautifully. Thanks for the fic, rann! I definitely deem it a "treat" rather than a "trick". :D
