Hi BlueBabe85 and welcome to The Lost World Fan Forum Smile

AJ is right.. everyone does wish for a wrap up (4th or 5th year) or mini-series or Movie. Smile In lieu of those events happening; Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens pulled together a summary of what could have been:

www.reeves-stevens.com click on The Lost World Link to read the summary. Questions.. ask anyone Smile

Thanks a million for the link CAP!!! Very Happy I printed off the summary and am savoring every word. I feel like a Hollywood exec as I run around with these unbelievable ideas for TLW seasons 4 and possibly 5. I saved it to read in traffic on the way home and am so glad I didn't ram the vehicle in front of me a few times. I will savor more tomorrow. It is something to look forward to and relish. It is a great gift from our extremely imaginative and talented writers.

I'll write my thoughts on this episode soon. I'm trying to go through the forum and respond to the best of my ability for each episode. Tonight, I cannot do justice to this one. It is both wonderful and horrible (horrible for being the end). I anticipated season four a good three years after the show ended. I kept going to the web site waiting for them to start production on season 4. Up until last week, I was the only one that watched the show. Now, I have all of you! Please bare with me, I'm excited.

Crying or Very sad Such a shame to see the final episode and the unanswered questions it brings about.
This was a truly revealing episode and a great one too.
I like the way the writters put the stories together for this episode-all different time zones and realities being played out.
Poor Finn-returned to her own time and to the life she desperately wanted to get away from.
Marguerite-hauled off to b sliced up by druids.
Roxton-we finally find out how his family got their title.
Challenger-strapped to an operating table awaiting a labotomy in some futuristic assylum. There being the ultimate Irony for him. The scientist being the one under the micro scope!
Veronica-the Plateau's protector. Trying her best to save all she loves and holds dear only for it slip through her fingers at the last moment as the plateau implodes.
One thing about this episode that is missing for me-Malone should have had a part written into it for him.
I know that at the time of production on this episode-everyone thought that series 4 would be a fore gone conclusion. Alas time has proven everyone wrong.
Sad

I've read the summary at least 5 times since my last writing. We were going to be in for so many treats, it's unreal. I won't spoil it for anyone that hasn't read the summary, but I would love to have seen those ideas transferred to the small screen. The dialogue would have been fierce and situations mind boggling. All of this could not have been planned from the very beginning. I believe our writers watched the show as faithfully as we did and saw each character develop into far more than they could have hoped for.

Veronica: For the most part, Jennifer stayed true to the innocent, independant child of the jungle. She was grateful to have companionship, but grieved over their mission to get off the plateau. Desiring to be loved, but having the ghost of Gladys as a constant reminder why she shouldn't pursue Ned. Always at odds with the worldly Marguerite and yet longing for a sister. She enjoyed Summerlee's spirit of guardianship over her and the sense of family he brought to the treehouse. She hit it off well with Roxton once they both got past his desire to shoot everything. Challenger must have reminded her of her father to some degree because she looked up to him.

Challenger: Heaven help me, I wanted to choke him. If his picture were in the dictionary, it could easily be next to the words pompous, arrogant, insolent and haughty. He started with no care for anyone and delighted in giving grief to the most humane one of all, Summerlee. He didn't care for Marguerite's acid tongue but didn't feel the need to try and calm her. Roxton was just an instrument to be used to suit his purpose and Malone was there to ultimately verify his genious through the written word. He seemed to appreciate Veronica, her treehouse and knowlege of the world around them. As time progressed though, he became human and learned to appreciate those around him. His studies moved from self glorification to improving the conditions around them.

Summerlee: This is the easy one. He was the heart of the treehouse family. A benevolent figure with an uncanny knack for cutting through the clutter to get to the heart of the matter. He was to The Lost World what the smell of home baked cookies is to walking in the front door of your home. What a presence and what a loss for seasons 2 and 3.

Ned: He is more than likely the character that represents all of us. Throughout the show, he was constantly discovering himself. He can be brave one minute and freeze in terror the next. His mind is constantly trying to work through things. A pat on the back felt is half appreciated and half undeserved. With Veronica, he has to learn how to cope with an attraction to someone far more adept than himself. There is nothing he can do in his mind to impress her. Roxton is a cross between an older brother and a good friend. He doesn't seek much from Roxton due to Roxton's distractions, but still feels he could if he chose to. Challenger is more someone to study than someone to bond with, but he doesn't possess the callous nature to dismiss this mans' humanity. Summerlee is an appreciated buffer between much of the sparks that fly around the treehouse. Marguerite could out fox him in her sleep, so she was too intimidating to fool with. She irked him often, but he was able to control his temper most of the time.

Roxton: He was a fairly simple man with a thirst for adventure. He stomped onto the plateau as protector and felt responsible for the safety of all. The only time his guard dropped was when Marguerite tweaked his nose. He didn't come looking for love but he didn't back away from it either. Marguerite went from an object of lust to disgust, then desire and ultimately to love. Possibly, he inadvertently admired Challenger in place of his father and older brother. Veronica was someone he felt he owed all of their safety to and tried to honor her to the best of his ability. She became a little sister in a sense of this family. Summerlee was someone else to protect as was Malone. Malone was a fellow beast of burden from time to time and they forged a good hearted friendship.

Marguerite: A rose by any other name would probably have fewer thorns. She is mysterious, dangerous, deadly, deceptive, cunning, beautiful and delightful. She may have come to the plateau as the dark horse, but she shone so brightly. Nothing was simple once you added her into the mix. She funded the entire expedition which certainly earned a great deal of gratitude at first. Once they found themselves stuck there, her stocks dropped in their estimation. In the beginning, I think they wouldn't have cared if she'd been lost. Although she never fully gained everyone's trust, they took her in as part of the family (more times than not, at Roxton's insistence). She antagonized all every chance she got and resented their situation more than appreciated any advantage they received. She came in a solid character and gave more slowly than the rest. Everyone was forced to adapt to her. She saw Veronica as a necessary evil in order to stay above the apemen, but didnt' feel the need to pander to her. Much later on, she becomes a big sister. Challenger was a blow hard that provided her the opportunity to come to the plateau in search of something no one would know about for a long time to come. He becomes a valued friend and equal in conversations. Ned was a nuisance originally but he too becomes a loved member of this treehouse family. Summerlee was someone she felt protective of at times and brought out her best behavior (if only for a minute). Roxton, Roxton. Where shall I begin? Better yet, where shall I end? Let's light a match and pour some gasoline on it then see what happens. OOOH! Let's do it again, and again, and again. I think there were dinosaurs in this show, maybe cannibals and head hunters. Could have been some amazons, kobolds, werewolves, witches and vampires too. But I am certain there was a magic called Roxton and Marguerite which was cast upon me every week for three glorious seasons.

The summary for seasons four and possibly five would have given us more resolution and shocking insights into their world. Just the gift of the summary is wonderful. My imagination will have to carry on and I have three seasons on DVD still to wear out. Thank you everyone for being here in the forums with me. Very Happy

Very interesting insights into the characters' characters. In most areas I would agree. The only one where I might quibble was your description of the early Roxton.

Quote:
Roxton: He was a fairly simple man with a thirst for adventure. He stomped onto the plateau as protector and felt responsible for the safety of all. The only time his guard dropped was when Marguerite tweaked his nose. He didn't come looking for love but he didn't back away from it either. I'm not sure that Roxton was so simple. To tell the truth I didn't really care for him at first. He seemed so bloodthirsty and jaded and world-weary - careless of his own life and the lives of creatures in the natural world. The way he took up his gun when Assai called up from beneath the treehouse; it seemed that he just needed to kill something, anything. He was really on the expedition to bag the greatest trophy of all - a T-rex. He drank, he smoked and his repartee with Miss Krux though quite witty was fairly disrespectful even to the point of dropping her on her keister for objecting to his rescue. He 'had issues' with simians - all apes - and we soon found out that he had killed his own brother and was still traumatized by that act - the kind of guilt that goes bone-deep.

I think it was duty alone that had kept him going after his brother's death, responsibility to his family and the ideal of a gentleman's honour - even if he did tell Marguerite that he was 'no more a gentleman than she was a lady'. We find out eventually that further guilt (coupled with inspiration) tied him to Challenger. Challenger made that speech in MI5 HQ during the war about it taking "one person [to stop evil leaders from bringing the world to the brink of destruction]. And then there will always be others, brave and true enough to follow." That was the anthem that gave Roxton purpose - made more ironic by the fact that he was the one who decided to sacrifice Challenger's research to protect the identity of some unknown triple agent - Parsifal. And he had to keep that secret for so many years.

So his past and his motivations were really not simple at all. Roxton's instincts may have been pure and honourable but his life and psyche was a mess. As far as he was concerned his soul was damned. He saw himself more as destroyer than protector. So just like all the others he was in much need of redemption 'to start again, fresh and new'. Luckily the plateau and his relationships with all the explorers and most particularly Marguerite who bothered to ask him how he felt and to listen to what he said - those things led to his healing. By mid-season 2, he knew his heart and his mind and he became the protector they all needed.

That was exquisite, santacrux! I enjoyed reading it so much and took away many different insights into our dear Roxton that hadn't occurred to me. There is so much depth and beauty to your writing that is a reflection of how special this show is. I tried to take the characters from the beginning of the series to the end in relation with each other. Also with an economy of words (very hard for me once I start talking about TLW).

In the beginning I saw someone proud of his title of Lord and didn't mind flaunting it at the meeting. In the canoe, his hand never left his rifle. He leans against a tree on the plateau and complains about nothing to shoot. He takes aim at Assai once in the tree house. I saw him as someone hired to defend the expedition although his interest was in bagging a T-Rex. In the beginning, he was the only one known to be adept at fire arms. Fortunately, none of them witnessed the heiress with a pistol in the alley. We find out later about Malone's time in war. But a journalist, heiress and scientists should not have been expected to be familiar with weapons. *Throws hand up* We will not discuss the unfortunate keister escapade! I think I bruise every time I watch that part. Embarassed I guess that's why in the first two episodes, I saw him simply as a hired gun. He evolved beautifully before our eyes though.

Xelda - in the pilot movie (if you're ever lucky enough to get a copy) we learn that Marguerite is quite handy with a rifle as well. Laughing Roxton learns it as well.

The first two eps are similar to the movie, but some scenes from the movie were cut completely and some scenes were added to the first two eps that aren't in the movie.

Doesn't anyone else think that Heart of the Storm episode had one of the sweetest moments between Roxton and Marguerite? I love that whole dialogue between them regarding Roxton's 'pirate' ancestor. I love the banter between them and then it was actually Marguerite who made a move on Roxton first, perhaps to make up for laughing at him.

This final episode really made me feel as if they were starting to become a couple and to think of all the future exploration of their relationship together we could have witnessed!

I read the fourth season transcript and unfortunately i liked the direction it was headed. I don't know if knowing what the fourth season had in store for each character is a good thing, as it just makes me feel upset that we are never going to see it on screen and still feel that i don't have closure from this show. Just knowing there was more to come, frustrating beyond belief!

YES, YES, YES, YES, YES! I agree 100% outlaw! As always, Marguerite was waving a tasty sample of her affection before Roxton like a red flag in front of a bull. Reading the summary for possible season 4 and 5 was that red flag and this time I was the bull. I loved every insinuation and knew the writers had their fingers on our pulse. I also know they were going to tease us mercilessly with more romantic implications before it was all over. I love those guys!

I totally agree with you, guys, but hey, outlaw24, why is that "we could have witnessed"? I know some people gave up hope for S4 a long time ago, but I'm not one of them, and from what you wrote in other topics, I thought you weren't either. Neutral Or am I wrong? Rolling Eyes

No, you're not wrong. I still believe, that was just a momentary lapse of frustration! Wink
