It's Rachel's birthday in Australia.. thought I would add a few articles, one from the Newline board and one (or two or three) articles that are old dating back to 1991/1992/1993 but new to both forums:
Tales of the South Seas
1999
Robert Fidgeon talks to the stars of a sizzling new series from Ten
MID-MORNING on Queensland's Airley Beach, and everyone is in search of a little respite from the heat.
But it's the brawl in the bar, not the heat, that causes tempers to explode.
Adventurer and fortune hunter David Grief is arguing with a suspected smuggler. Words are exchanged. Punches are thrown.
The bar owner, sexy Lavinia, watches apprehensively as the fight spills on to veranda, then down on to the sand. The locals gather to urge on the protagonists.
Temptress Isabelle, who's already seduced Grief, much to Lavinia's displeasure, smiles, enjoying the fight she has provoked.
``Cut! That's great,'' yells director Ian Barry.
The crew start moving cameras and sound gear to the next location.
They're shooting Tales of the South Seas, Ten's big-budget, turn-of-the-century, high-seas adventure series.
The star is William Snow, a former model and James Packer's one-time personal trainer.
Ruggedly handsome, Snow plays part-entrepreneur, part-rogue David Grief, who sails the South Seas aboard his schooner Rattler in search of . . . well, trouble mainly.
Co-starring are New Zealander Rene Naufahu as Mauriri, Grief's Polynesian partner and friend; British actor Rowena King as Lavinia, the bar owner and Grief's lover; andRachel Blakely as Isabelle, the fiery, seductive adventurer.
Completing the principle cast are Kimberly Joseph, Mark Lee, Adrian Wright and John Freeman.
``It's been exhausting but it's been fun,'' Blakely says, sitting on a wooden beer keg as the cameras are wheeled into position for the next scene.
``We start early in the morning in an attempt to beat the heat, but as you can see, it warms up very quickly.''
Isabelle gives Grief more grief than he ever thought possible, and their relationship provides the series with much of its fireworks.
The turn-of-the-century, South Seas coastal town is a far cry from Ramsay Street, where Blakely resided for a time, playing Gaby Willis in Neighbours.
``It's quite a contrast, isn't it?'' she says, laughing.
``The three years on Ramsay Street were enjoyable and certainly a time of development for me.''
An Australian-International co-production, Tales of the South Seas has taken some time to get to the screen.
It has been two years since Blakely and I first sat on location at Airley Beach.
Based on the classic stories by Jack London, the show's not huge on plot, but is big on action and has an exotic backdrop.
The town has been built on part of the foreshore overlooking the water, and it forms one of the most expensive locations ever constructed. The lavish, multi-million-dollar production is all boy's own yarns of cutthroats, smugglers, fortune hunters, privateers, medicine men, land grabs, treasure hunts, beggars and ancient pagan customs.
``The production values are extremely high,'' Blakely says. ``But it's got all that old-fashioned, romantic story style about deals, double-crosses, intrigue and sex set in this exotic sort of world.
``Isabelle and Grief have this spicy relationship. She tempts him, then double-crosses him in the next breath.''
Rowena King plays the other woman in Grief's life.
A member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, King's theatre credits include the classics Richard III, King Lear and Kenneth Branagh's movie version of Hamlet.
``The role of Lavinia has been a huge change of pace for me,'' King says.
``If people are into romance and adventure, then they should find something to like in this.''
Blue Heelers
1995
TO research her new role as an ambulance
driver in Blue Heelers, Rachel Blakely went on the road with a MICA unit.
"I spent a night with an ambulance crew and it was just amazing, incredible," says the former Neighbours star.
"I have so much respect for those people."
Luckily Rachel managed to avoid any really gruesome car accidents - "I don't think I would have been able to cope" - but she did see some sad sights.
"They were mainly elderly women with heart problems," she says.
"We got them all to hospitals and hopefully everything turned out all right."
However, Rachel says her Blue Heelers character, Gina Belfanti, would have taken it all in her stride.
"She's so totally different to any other character I've played," Blakely says.
"She's really strong, just loves her work and helping people. She thinks she can really make a difference."
After nearly three years in Neighbours as Gaby Willis, Blakely is happy to be only a semi-regular in Blue Heelers.
"I'm really enjoying the freedom at the moment," she says.
"It's a totally different style of working. I'm getting to do a whole range of things."
She believes she was lucky not to have been typecast as a Neighbours starlet.
"I'm sure some people thought, `Oh no, Neighbours, we won't even bother getting her in for an audition', because they didn't want to be associated with such a long-running character.
"But people have really given me a fair go. I'm over the Moon about it."
Rachel doesn't regret her stint in the soap, and concedes the decision to leave was hard, but she believed the time was right to move on.
"I learnt an incredible amount, even up to the last day I was still enjoying it," she says.
"It's always hard to give up security, to throw yourself out there. You always think you are never going to get another job.
"You go through the `nobody is ever going to hire me again, I'm going to have to clean toilets or whatever' thing," she says.
"But you must have a certain amount of faith in yourself and in other people to accept you. So far I've been very lucky."
Rachel says she has a few interesting projects coming up but is reluctant to talk about any.
"I've got something good coming up but I haven't signed the contract so I don't want to jinx it by talking about it," she says.
All she would give away was that it was for a film, not television or theatre.
Neighbours
1994
NEIGHBOURLY AID
THE cares of Neighbours cast members extend well beyond Ramsay Street as their extra-curricular activities reveal.
Julie Mullins, who plays Julie Martin in the Ten soap, is a fundraiser for the AIDS Council. She has joined a care team for HIV sufferers which, after training, involves helping out the person to whom she is assigned several hours a week.
Away from his role as Rick Alessi, barman at Lassiters, Dan Falzon follows his concern for the environment.
He will be a spokesman for the Wilderness Society in the lead up to its badge day on June 5. This will include flying by light aircraft over East Gippsland to view the area the society is campaigning to protect from logging.
Rachel Blakely (Gabi Willis) is promoting World Vision's 40-Hour Famine to be held from June 3-5. She has already coerced Tom Oliver (Lou Carpenter), Brett Blewitt (Brett Stark) and Marnie Reece-Wilmore (Debbie Martin) into becoming fasters. Rebecca Ritters (Hannah Martin) is too young to fast and will be a famine fighter, missing one meal for sponsorship.
Finally, Eliza Szonert (Danni Stark) and Kimberley Davies (Annelise Hartman) are campaigning for ARK, an environmental foundation working with industry to highlight the need to look after our world.
and from 1991
A bloomin' good show
NEIGHBOURS newcomer Rachel Blakely took time out to smell the flowers yesterday.
The 21-year-old star of the Channel Ten soapie ventured to the Australian national flower show at the World Congress Centre.
Rachel, who claims to have a green thumb, was among hundreds of gardeners taking in the scents and sights of the third annual show.
Keen spring gardeners took stock of new color varieties - many unveiled for the first time - and floral arrangements by the experts.
Organisers hope the show will encourage Australians to appreciate flowers more, and spark greater spending on what many consider to be a luxury item.
According to statistics, Australians spend an average of $15 a year on flowers, compared to Germans who spend $42 and Italians' $46.
You can catch the show from 10am today, and 9am tomorrow and Sunday.
P.S. Favorite Fruit and Veg (culled from other articles):
But on the healthy side, Rachel enjoys salads and pasta made with fresh tomatoes.
Watermelon is her favorite fruit.
Favorite Veg:
Potatoes...

Hm, there is no topic for Rachel birthday yet, and I'm not going to have Internet for 2 days (I'm leaving after 10 minutes, because I'm going to my grandma, she is in a village, and she has no Internet), so I'l say it here:
Happy, Happy Birthday Rachel!
I wish you all the best, and I hope you'll have great fun on your birthday!
